Blonde Horticultural Grade
Sphagnum Peat Moss

Sphagnum peat moss adds significant colonizable geography to the matrix, increases porosity, decreases density, and adds stable carbon structures. The grade we choose for our blends is a coarse blend that may contain small sticks that elude the screening process. We choose not to use finely milled and screened peat because the coarser peat gives better loft, air carrying capacity, and drainage.

We often recieve calls from concerned customers regarding the use of peat moss and the misconception that it is a nonrenewable resource. This reflects the truth of the European history of peat use and abuse. Most of the peat harvested in the word has been harvested for fuel for heat or electricity. Horticulture is a small portion of world demand. The areas of Canada from which we purchase peat use strictly regulated harvest methods designed and intended to address the environmental impacts on and long term sustainability of the bogs. Canadian researchers have proved that bogs can be regrown and all major harvestors have agreed to abide by a set of protocols which enable regrowth for the future.
