Angelic Organics—Caledonia, IL |
We are a small farm in Northern Illinois dedicated to growing organic and biodynamic vegetables for our CSA.
We make over 3,000 soil flats in our greenhouse each season for our vegetable transplants. We use Fort V and Compost Plus in our soil block maker. Vermont Compost gives our transplants the head start needed to be strong and healthy throughout the growing season.
Avalanche Organics | Viola, WI |
Nestled in the ancient hills along the Kickapoo River resides a farm striving for sustainability. Although changing with every annual cycle, focus on the local and global organic movement has been a constant. With salad mix and spinach production being the specialization of Avalanche Organics, we also grow many other crops: heirloom tomatoes, potatoes, root crops, bunched herbs, squash, strawberries, asparagus and various wild crafting. We would like to thank our employees and accounts. Visitors welcome!
Our farm specializes in greens, vegetables, and culinary herbs for sale at many coops and/or restaurants in Minneapolis, Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago, Lacrosse, and Viroqua. We strive for sustainablity, and communication in our local and global community. We look to the future in pioneering more towards green power and a lighter imprint on our world as we feed more and more of our fellow citizens.
What They Say
We have been buying soil from Vermont Compost for many years now. They continue to improve past any other potting soils we have found. This year we had the opportunity to meet and visit with Karl and Joey here on our farm turf. They are wonderfully fun to converse with. It makes me want to come visit the east coast to see how many more great people with farming knowledge there are and of course to visit Vermont Compost. Networking is the key to gathering ourselves, sharing what we have to offer while preparing for the future

Four Season Farm | Harborside, ME
These folks have been using Fort Vee for years. Eliot "wrote the book" on organic greenhouse production, always made his own potting soil before, but now enjoys the convenience of buying a reliable block making mix. He says it is easier, more reliable and more cost effective than making his own. If you want to see beautiful pictures of life on the Fort Vee covered ground, go look at Barbara’s excellent photo’s.
It was Eliot, in the late 70’s, who memorably said, "As you put transplants out on your land, over time you are adding a layer of material to your farm. It should be blended for long term benefit. Fort Vee grew from that concept, principally composed of stable humus, sharp granite sand, and other ingredients with long term benifit to arable soil.
Harmony Valley | Viroqua, Wisconsin |
We grow 100 acres of fresh market vegetables. We have 6000 square feet of greenhouse space devoted to plants for our fields.
We are a CSA and wholesale grower.
What They Say
We did pretty good making our own soil mix. We tried several other mixes but when we went to 100% vt compost mix was the first year we were able to have a successful translate rate of 100%.
It didn’t cost us any more money than making our own.

What they say
Here at High Mowing we have used the VT Compost FortV potting mix for 9 years and have had such consistent and high quality results that we would not dare to trust our seeds to another mix. Karl Hammer is a master composter and mix maker. He understands the complex needs of germinating seedlings and has carefully blended this mix for organic growers and gardeners everywhere. Millions and millions of seedlings have gotten a strong and healthy start in Fort V. as it contains ample nutrients to carry most vegetable and flower starts to transplant.

Highland Gardens | Putnamville, Vermont |
We are a small, family-owned nursery on a central Vermont hillside. We grow annuals, vegetable starts, perennials, lilies, small fruits and small shrubs.
What They Say
We’ve been using Vermont Compost Company products for close to 10 years. We especially use Fort V and Perennial Blend. The Fort V gets our annuals from transplant to sale with no further fertilization needed. We do topdress our geraniums with Compost Plus to get them nice and full. All of our vegetable starts, perennials, shrubs, lilies and small fruits are planted into Perennial Blend. We’ve had such great results from using these products. It has taken the guesswork out of growing. Vermont Compost Company is a great resource for information as well as for their products.

Walkup Heritage Farm & Gardens | Crystal Lake, IL |
What they say:
I live in a house that was built by my great great grandfather over 150 years ago out of cobblestones hauled 40 miles from Lake Michigan in oxcarts. It left the family when my grandpare nts died in 1972 and in 1997 my wife and I reacquired it. I have landscaped it in native and heirloom plants such as would have been found when the house was built and through the end of that century and sell the plants retail from the property. I also grow heirloom varieties of vegetables and fruit through a CSA and at local market and directly to high end restaurants. Everything is grown naturally but I am not certified organic. I also sell organic growing supplies including Vermont Compost and use it as my potting soil for the vegetable starts. There is a walking tour of the property on our website.
Wood Prairie Farm | Bridgewater, ME |
Our family raises Certified Organic Potatoes on our 110 acre organic farm in northern Maine’s Aroostook County. Andean or “Irish” potatoes are the traditional crop grown by the family farmers of Aroostook for the last 200 years. Our sandy loam soils and cool climate are perfect for growing potatoes.
We have been growing organic potatoes for over 30 years amid the potato culture of Maine’s Potato Empire, formerly the leading potato production center in the US. Contrary to our neighbors who have scaled up to become large producers of process stock for french fries, we have held to tradition and remained small scale to maintain the quality of our potatoes. We utilize long crop rotations and soil building cover crops that nurture our fields and allow us to grow the best tasting and most nutrient dense (high Brix reading) organic potatoes.
